XRF Scrap Metal Testing: How to Identify Stainless Steel, Nickel, Copper & Aluminium Alloys
By Telos Instruments Trading LLC · Al Uthman Building, Deira, Dubai, UAE · Published 9 October 2026
Quick answer: A handheld XRF analyzer reads the chemical composition of scrap metal and matches it to a library of alloy grades in about 1–2 seconds, with no cutting or grinding. That lets dealers separate 304 from 316 stainless, spot nickel alloys, sort brass from bronze, and tell aluminium series apart. In the UAE, Telos Instruments in Deira, Dubai supplies three Terra Scientific analyzers for this work: the Pi900E, EulerX 900 and EulerX 900S.
Why Grade Identification Matters for UAE Scrap Dealers
Scrap is priced by grade, not by colour. Stainless steel, nickel alloys, copper alloys and aluminium can look alike, yet sell at very different prices. Misgrading costs money both ways: valuable material sold cheaply, or low-grade material bought at a premium. In the busy yards of Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman, where mixed loads move fast towards mills and export buyers, magnet and spark tests are too slow and too dependent on operator experience. XRF replaces judgement with measurement at the point of purchase.
How XRF Identifies an Alloy
- Excitation: the analyzer directs an X-ray beam at the metal’s surface.
- Fluorescence: each element in the alloy re-emits energy at its own characteristic wavelength.
- Calculation: the detector reads these signals and the software calculates each element’s percentage.
- Grade match: the chemistry is compared with a stored grade library and the closest match is reported.
The process is non-destructive, and most shapes need little or no preparation. Clean contact between the analyzer window and the metal gives the most reliable result.
Identifying Each Alloy Family
Stainless steel (304, 316 and others)
Stainless grades look alike and often share magnetic behaviour, so a magnet can’t separate them. XRF reads chromium, nickel and molybdenum directly. The key distinction is molybdenum: 316 contains it, 304 essentially does not. Since 316 usually commands a higher price, this single check often pays for the analyzer.
Nickel alloys
Nickel-based alloys and nickel-bearing grades are among the most valuable scrap and the hardest to recognise by eye. XRF measures nickel along with chromium, molybdenum, cobalt, iron and other elements to identify them, protecting you from selling premium material at ordinary scrap prices.
Copper alloys
Copper, brass (copper-zinc) and bronze (copper-tin) are separated by reading copper, zinc, tin, lead and other alloying elements. Correct sorting keeps each bin to a single grade, which buyers pay more for.
Aluminium alloys
Aluminium scrap spans many alloy series. Separating them depends on elements such as magnesium, silicon, zinc and copper. Because magnesium and silicon are light elements, the analyzer must be able to read them, which is why the EulerX 900S adds Mg, Al, Si, P and S detection for aluminium-heavy yards.
Where XRF has limits
Handheld XRF generally does not measure carbon, so distinctions that rely on carbon content may need other methods. Always confirm your target grades’ requirements with your supplier before choosing a model.
The Instruments: Pi900E, EulerX 900 and EulerX 900S
🔬 EulerX 900
A full-featured handheld alloy analyzer for scrap recycling and grade identification. It has an SDD detector and an Ag-target 50kV X-ray tube, identifies grades in roughly 1–2 seconds, and carries a library of 1,600+ alloy grades (AISI, DIN, JIS, GB) that can be edited. It offers an IP54 build, a 7.2V 6600mAh battery for long field use, WiFi and USB transfer, and storage for 100,000+ results. It weighs about 1.5 kg and shuts the X-ray source off automatically when no sample is present.

Practical Tips for UAE Yards
- Test at intake before agreeing a price, then re-test sorted bins before shipping.
- Clean the surface, and test coated or painted pieces on a bare spot where possible.
- Use a test stand and backscatter shield for safe, hands-free testing.
- Keep stored results against lot numbers for export buyers.
- XRF devices contain a low-level X-ray source, so import and use may require registration with the relevant UAE authority; your supplier can guide you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. 316 contains molybdenum and 304 essentially does not. XRF measures molybdenum and nickel directly, so it separates the two grades in seconds.
Yes, if the analyzer reads the light elements involved, such as magnesium and silicon. The EulerX 900S adds detection of Mg, Al, Si, P and S for this purpose.
The EulerX 900 series identifies alloy grades in roughly 1–2 seconds, with longer test times available for more precise chemistry.
No. XRF is non-destructive. It reads composition from the surface without cutting, grinding or marking the piece.
Generally no. Handheld XRF analyzers do not usually measure carbon, so carbon-based grade distinctions may need other methods.
